What we can help with
- Corrections. If a figure on this site does not match the source it cites, or you have a better source, tell us. We would rather be corrected than be wrong, and we have changed published pages more than once on this basis.
- Calculator requests. If there is a material you keep having to work out by hand, say so. Several of the calculators here exist because someone asked.
- Questions about a number. Every calculator shows its full working, but if a result does not look right for your project, send us the measurements and we will check it.
- Guest posts. See the Write for Us page first — it sets out what we accept and what we do not.
What we cannot do
We are not contractors, engineers or a licensing authority, and there are three things we genuinely cannot answer:
- Local building code. Frost depth, permit thresholds and minimum footing depths are set by your city or county, and they vary far more than most people expect. Your building department is the only correct source for your address.
- Local prices. Material costs differ by region, season and supplier. We do not publish prices because any number we gave you would be wrong somewhere.
- Site-specific engineering. Soil conditions, drainage and loading on your particular plot need someone who can see it.
How to make a correction stick
If you are reporting an error, the fastest route is to include the page, the figure you think is wrong, and what it should be. A published source carries the most weight — a standard, a manufacturer's specification, or an extension publication. Every guide on this site lists its sources at the bottom, so you can see what we used before you write.
